“This Grain of Sand is Too Heavy”
by Mary Van Milligen
The hourglass drips to the base.
It doesn’t stop. Flows every hour.
Soft, steady sand, unyielding pace
Flashing seconds, endless power
Ticking, clicking, from noon to night
The ship has sailed, third times a charm
Vanishing minutes from our sight
Time’s running out, ring the alarm
Desperate to rewind for one space
The longing moments in my heart
Recalling safety, first embrace
Beckoning feelings from the start
The time when our eyes united fast.
Intertwined hands, entrancing glance
Like the steady sands from our past.
Music paused in the final dance.
I want the seconds, minutes back
Agony feeling this love lost
Fast forward this heavy attack
The price of peace, too much a cost
Time invites himself to my mind.
He asks me to let him heal all.
Time needs to stop and be more kind.
He leads me down a narrow hall.
Opens a door, leaves me alone
Gives me my space, makes me let go
Give up the promise, give up love’s throne
Time to find my way, let heartbreak flow.
The hourglass drips to the base.
It doesn’t stop. Flows every hour.
Soft, steady sand, unyielding pace
Flashing seconds, endless power.
